Hydrogen in Action

Spotlight on Canada

Canada has the natural resources, infrastructure, skilled workforce and project pipeline to become one of the world’s most important clean hydrogen production bases.

In a changing energy world, this is a major strategic opportunity.

Ahead of the Canadian Hydrogen Convention in Edmonton, where our CEO Ivana Jemelkova will speaking today, Hydrogen Council’s data as of September 2025 highlights Canada’s growing hydrogen landscape:

💰 $6.6 billion in committed investment
📊 0.75 Mtpa of committed clean hydrogen capacity
♻️ 97% low-carbon hydrogen with vast wind resources priming Canada for future export leadership

So, what does this look like on the ground? With major projects from Air Liquide, Air Products, Linde and Shell and others either in operation or under development, Canada is already home to some of the world’s most significant clean hydrogen and CCUS infrastructure. For example:

Air Liquide has been building its Bécancour platform since 2021, combining an already operational 20MW PEM electrolyzer with a new low-carbon gas production complex – creating one of North America’s most integrated clean hydrogen and industrial gas hubs.

Air Products is advancing construction on a CAD $1.6 billion net-zero hydrogen energy complex in Edmonton – combining large-scale production with existing pipeline infrastructure to decarbonize refining, enable heavy-duty transport, and drive regional economic growth.

Linde is investing more than $2 billion to build a new integrated clean hydrogen facility in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland to supply Dow’s Path2Zero project. Upon its completion in 2028, it will be Canada’s largest clean hydrogen production facility and one of the largest globally, capturing more than 2 million metric tons of CO₂ annually.

Shell Canada’s Quest CCS facility has been in operation since 2015 safely storing CO₂ from hydrogen production and sharing learnings to accelerate wider deployment across the industry. It has now stored over 10 million tons of CO₂

The bigger picture?
✅ Pragmatic, scalable deployment pathways are taking shape
✅ Low-carbon production and CCUS are delivering near-term impact
✅ Renewable potential positions Canada as a future export leader
Policy, infrastructure, and demand creation will determine how fast this momentum scales, but the foundation is being laid.

We’re looking forward to hearing more about how Canada is working to catalyze the next stage of hydrogen scale-up at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention in Edmonton.
