Renewable hydrogen: myth vs. fact

Recent headlines about project cancellations have created the impression that renewable hydrogen is stalling. What the data shows, however, is a familiar pattern: a normal phase of market maturation (moving from announcements to delivery) – like the early scale-up of wind, solar, and batteries – where projects with the strongest business cases advance.

According to our Global Hydrogen Compass 2025 report:
🔹 Operational renewable hydrogen capacity has grown eightfold in the past five years
🔹 Capacity increased by 65% in the last 12 months alone
🔹 Of the 6 mtpa of committed clean hydrogen capacity today, more than half is renewable
🔹 Even after accounting for delays and attrition, 5–7 mtpa of renewable capacity could come online by 2030

The takeaway is clear: progress is real, and momentum is shifting from announcements to delivery. What happens next depends on demand certainty, infrastructure investment, and practical implementation of existing policies.
