C&#039;est en ce jour de la COP21 \u00e0 Paris que 195 pays ont sign\u00e9 un accord juridiquement contraignant pour maintenir le r\u00e9chauffement climatique bien en dessous de 2\u00b0C, signalant une transformation majeure du syst\u00e8me \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique mondial. L&#039;urgence climatique \u00e9tant d\u00e9sormais pressante, nous devons nous \u00e9loigner des syst\u00e8mes de production et de consommation d&#039;\u00e9nergie bas\u00e9s sur les combustibles fossiles au profit de sources renouvelables telles que l&#039;\u00e9olien et le solaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne propre et ses d\u00e9riv\u00e9s jouent un r\u00f4le essentiel dans ce nouveau syst\u00e8me \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique qui vise \u00e0 atteindre des \u00e9missions nettes nulles dans le monde d&#039;ici 2050. En compl\u00e9ment d&#039;autres technologies de d\u00e9carbonisation qui doivent \u00eatre d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es dans l&#039;\u00e9conomie mondiale, l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne propre offre la seule solution \u00e0 long terme, \u00e9volutive et option rentable pour une d\u00e9carbonation profonde dans les secteurs difficiles \u00e0 r\u00e9duire tels que l&#039;acier, les transports lourds et l&#039;ammoniac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D&#039;ici 2050, le Hydrogen Council estime que l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne peut \u00e9viter 80 gigatonnes (GT) d&#039;\u00e9missions cumul\u00e9es de CO2 (dioxyde de carbone). Avec un potentiel d&#039;abattement annuel de sept GT d&#039;ici 2050, l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne pourrait alors contribuer \u00e0 hauteur de 20% \u00e0 l&#039;abattement total n\u00e9cessaire. Cela n\u00e9cessiterait l&#039;utilisation de 660 millions de tonnes (MT) d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne renouvelable et \u00e0 faible \u00e9mission de carbone en 2050, soit l&#039;\u00e9quivalent de 22% de la demande \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique finale mondiale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne est donc essentiel pour permettre un syst\u00e8me \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique d\u00e9carbon\u00e9 - nous l&#039;avons soulign\u00e9 dans le rapport du Hydrogen Council <em>Hydrog\u00e8ne pour Net Zero<\/em> rapport, publi\u00e9 en 2021. Mais la r\u00e9organisation des structures \u00e9conomiques et industrielles d&#039;aujourd&#039;hui sera importante. Pour d\u00e9carboniser l&#039;\u00e9conomie mondiale aussi rapidement, efficacement et \u00e0 moindre co\u00fbt que possible, nous avons besoin d&#039;un commerce international de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne pour relier les sources d&#039;\u00e9nergie renouvelable bon march\u00e9 aux zones \u00e0 forte demande. C&#039;est l&#039;objet du tout nouveau rapport du Conseil, <em>Flux mondiaux d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne<\/em>, sorti en octobre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Flux mondiaux d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne<\/em>, co-\u00e9crit par McKinsey &amp; Company, relie notre pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent rapport 2020, <em>Chemin vers la comp\u00e9titivit\u00e9 de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne<\/em>, qui explore les co\u00fbts et b\u00e9n\u00e9fices \u00e9conomiques de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne comme vecteur de d\u00e9carbonation, avec <em>Hydrog\u00e8ne pour Net Zero<\/em>, qui estime la croissance globale de la demande en ligne avec les objectifs 2050 Net Zero. Le nouveau rapport donne une perspective sur la mani\u00e8re dont les flux commerciaux mondiaux de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne pourraient se d\u00e9velopper et sur les investissements n\u00e9cessaires pour les d\u00e9bloquer, donnant une image de ce \u00e0 quoi pourrait ressembler l&#039;\u00e9conomie mondiale de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne d&#039;ici 2050 si elle \u00e9tait \u00e9conomiquement optimis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le rapport souligne que les investissements cumul\u00e9s dans l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne seront multipli\u00e9s par cinq entre 2030 et 2040 ($1 trillion en 2030 \u00e0 $5 trillion en 2040), puis doubleront \u00e0 nouveau d&#039;ici 2050 pour atteindre $10 trillion. Cela signifie que les investissements dans l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne atteindront $500 milliards par an d&#039;ici 2050, soit l&#039;\u00e9quivalent de 25% des d\u00e9penses globales actuelles en \u00e9nergie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La trajectoire Hydrogen for Net Zero verrait la demande d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne en 2030 \u00e0 145 MT, passant \u00e0 plus de 660 MT d&#039;ici 2050. <em>Flux mondiaux d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne<\/em> d\u00e9crit comment nous pourrions livrer ces 660 MT, et la trajectoire qui y m\u00e8ne, aussi efficacement et rapidement que possible. O\u00f9 faut-il produire l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne ? Comment doit-il \u00eatre produit ? Avec quelles technologies et ressources ? Et, c\u0153ur du sujet, pour quoi faire \u2013 d\u00e9placer l&#039;\u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique, comme vecteur combustible lui-m\u00eame, ou comme produit fini ? Cela d\u00e9terminera la forme sous laquelle l&#039;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 ou l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne est d\u00e9plac\u00e9 autour du globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous reconnaissons qu&#039;il existe des march\u00e9s qui seront autosuffisants dans leur propre production d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne, que ce soit gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des ressources renouvelables ou \u00e0 des installations de s\u00e9questration du carbone. Il y a des pays et des r\u00e9gions qui sont aujourd&#039;hui d&#039;\u00e9normes importateurs d&#039;\u00e9nergie et continueront d&#039;\u00eatre d&#039;\u00e9normes importateurs d&#039;\u00e9nergie \u00e0 l&#039;avenir. Ensuite, il y a des r\u00e9gions qui peuvent produire elles-m\u00eames beaucoup d&#039;\u00e9nergie renouvelable, mais pas assez pour couvrir leurs propres besoins. Ici, ce sera un m\u00e9lange de production renouvelable nationale et d&#039;importations - et l&#039;Europe en est l&#039;exemple \u00e9vident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En examinant o\u00f9 nous pensons que l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne sera produit et comment il se d\u00e9placera dans le monde, cela montre ce qui suit\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Un tiers de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne dans le monde sera produit localement pour une consommation locale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Un tiers de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne sera produit dans des zones connect\u00e9es aux zones de consommation par pipeline - les pipelines sont le moyen le moins cher de d\u00e9placer de grandes quantit\u00e9s d&#039;\u00e9nergie<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Un tiers de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne sera transport\u00e9 (sous diverses formes) \u00e0 travers le monde par bateau.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Si nous n&#039;avons pas de commerce international, alors toute l&#039;\u00e9nergie devra \u00eatre produite pr\u00e8s de l&#039;endroit o\u00f9 elle est consomm\u00e9e. Comme <em>Flux mondiaux d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne<\/em> montre, les zones de grande consommation d&#039;\u00e9nergie ne sont pas align\u00e9es avec les zones de grande disponibilit\u00e9 des ressources renouvelables. Si vous n&#039;autorisez pas le commerce international, vous devez plut\u00f4t installer beaucoup plus de production d&#039;\u00e9nergie renouvelable dans des zones o\u00f9 elle est en fait utilis\u00e9e de mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s inefficace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Chine, l&#039;Inde, le Japon, la Cor\u00e9e du Sud, l&#039;Europe et l&#039;Am\u00e9rique du Nord repr\u00e9senteront 75% de la demande mondiale d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne, la Chine devenant le plus gros consommateur dans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir. Mais le Japon et la Cor\u00e9e en particulier disposeront de ressources \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques renouvelables comp\u00e9titives tr\u00e8s limit\u00e9es \u2013 s&#039;ils devaient produire toute leur propre \u00e9nergie renouvelable, cela co\u00fbterait tr\u00e8s cher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il restera beaucoup moins cher d&#039;importer la plupart de leurs besoins en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 et en carburant, d&#039;Australie par exemple, et cette \u00e9nergie arrivera sous forme d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne ou de d\u00e9riv\u00e9s de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne (pensez \u00e0 l&#039;ammoniac pour la production d&#039;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9). Il convient de noter que, par cons\u00e9quent, le r\u00f4le des v\u00e9hicules \u00e0 pile \u00e0 combustible pourrait \u00eatre beaucoup plus \u00e9tendu au Japon et en Cor\u00e9e que dans de nombreuses r\u00e9gions du monde, car ils seront aussi efficaces, voire plus, que les VEB au niveau du syst\u00e8me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D\u00e9verrouille<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&#039;\u00e9volution du march\u00e9 mondial du gaz et du GNL peut avoir des parall\u00e8les avec le futur march\u00e9 mondial de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne. Cependant, le diff\u00e9renciateur cl\u00e9 est que la valeur de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne est contenue \u00e0 la fois dans la valeur du produit physique et dans la valeur de l&#039;attribut environnemental - en d&#039;autres termes, la certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour que le commerce international ait lieu, nous avons besoin de syst\u00e8mes de certification internationaux. La certification de l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne jouera un r\u00f4le crucial dans l&#039;\u00e9tablissement de la confiance des clients et leur permettra de choisir. Nous avons besoin que les d\u00e9cideurs politiques cr\u00e9ent des syst\u00e8mes fongibles reconnus \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9chelle internationale qui permettent \u00e0 l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne de se d\u00e9placer, et que les march\u00e9s de destination soient s\u00fbrs de ce qu&#039;ils ach\u00e8tent. Les r\u00e9gions importatrices et les clients individuels peuvent prendre leurs propres d\u00e9cisions concernant les attributs dont ils ont besoin pour respecter les normes locales (contenu renouvelable, intensit\u00e9 carbone), mais cela doit \u00eatre bas\u00e9 sur un ensemble de m\u00e9thodologies et de principes d&#039;identification g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement accept\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si cette certification est r\u00e9alis\u00e9e, elle stimulera la demande et permettra une approche bas\u00e9e sur le march\u00e9 de l&#039;approvisionnement en hydrog\u00e8ne. \u00c0 son tour, cela facilitera le commerce mondial et transfrontalier d&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne, permettant \u00e0 l&#039;offre et \u00e0 la demande de se rencontrer de mani\u00e8re efficace dans toutes les zones g\u00e9ographiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien s\u00fbr, pour permettre \u00e0 l&#039;hydrog\u00e8ne de se d\u00e9placer en tr\u00e8s grande quantit\u00e9, nous avons besoin d&#039;infrastructures \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper. Aujourd&#039;hui, l&#039;\u00e9nergie voyage sur de tr\u00e8s longues distances et cela va \u00eatre vrai dans le nouveau syst\u00e8me \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, nous sommes pass\u00e9s de projets de d\u00e9monstration \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9mergence de p\u00f4les de projets dans les vall\u00e9es et les ports. Ces hubs hydrog\u00e8ne locaux sont un concept tr\u00e8s fort \u00e0 mesure que de nouvelles structures industrielles commencent \u00e0 se d\u00e9velopper, et ils constituent une \u00e9tape importante de passage \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9chelle pour les nouvelles technologies. Mais les hubs devront \u00eatre interconnect\u00e9s via un syst\u00e8me d&#039;infrastructure complet pour r\u00e9pondre aux besoins \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques d&#039;une r\u00e9gion particuli\u00e8re, ce qui signifie des pipelines et des activit\u00e9s interconnect\u00e9es d&#039;\u00e9nergies renouvelables et d&#039;\u00e9lectrolyseurs.
