Renewably produced through electrochemical processes, this lower-carbon alternative to maritime bunker fuels and other diesel blends has reduced lifecycle emissions and lower sulfur content compared to conventional hydrocarbons. Accordingly, e-methanol is drawing interest from carbon-intensive industries such as shipping, logistics, and manufacturing.<\/p><p>In anticipation of that market demand, one of the world\u2019s largest e-methanol projects will soon make use of Clariant\u2019s methanol synthesis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clariant.com\/en\/Business-Units\/Catalysts\/Syngas-Catalysts\/Methanol\/MegaMax-800\">catalyst<\/a>. Called MegaMax\u00ae, the next-generation methanol synthesis catalyst is adept at combining hydrogen\u00a0and\u00a0captured CO<sub>2<\/sub> into\u00a0green methanol. In partnership with European Energy A\/S, a leader in renewable solutions, the Denmark-based facility is expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clariant.com\/en\/Corporate\/News\/2023\/07\/Clariants-MegaMax-catalyst-chosen-by-European-Energy-for-worlds-largest-emethanol-plant#:~:text=Located%20in%20Kasso%2C%20Denmark%2C%20the,carbon%20dioxide%20using%20Clariant's%20catalyst.\">produce<\/a> some 32,000 tons of e-methanol this year. That\u2019s enough to power a container ship run by a methanol dual-fuel engine for approximately one year.<\/p><p>Customer deals have already been inked. Toy manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-us\/aboutus\/news\/2023\/april\/european-energy-partners-with-novo-nordisk-and-the-lego-group?locale=en-us&amp;consent-modal=show&amp;age-gate=grown_up\">Lego<\/a> anticipates replacing fossil-based materials in plastic production, while Danish pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk aims to use e-methanol to build greener medical devices, such as insulin pens. Shipping giant Maersk, meanwhile, wants to use the alternative fuel to power its first-ever carbon-neutral fleet.<\/p><p>To understand why, just look at the technology itself. But the use of CO<sub>2<\/sub> from biogenic emissions and direct air capture, which reduces the lifecycle carbon footprint for e-methanol customers, is drawing the most attention.<\/p><p>CO<sub>2<\/sub> is essentially employed as a renewable source, which addresses the dual challenge of decarbonization and questions about producing a versatile fuel. Efficiencies are gained by adding more active sites in the catalyst, where chemical reactions occur, resulting in greater e-methanol yields with higher stability for the technology that creates it. This ensures a longer lifespan for MegaMax\u00ae and higher performance for its product. \u00a0<\/p><p>Stability and lower conversion efficiencies have been common challenges for e-methanol. Another main barrier to its broader adoption, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/-\/media\/Files\/IRENA\/Agency\/Publication\/2021\/Jan\/IRENA_Innovation_Renewable_Methanol_2021.pdf?rev=ca7ec52e824041e8b20407ab2e6c7341\">according<\/a> to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), has been \u201cits higher cost compared to fossil fuel-based alternatives&#8221;.<\/p><p>Clariant recognized these challenges early on as it worked with European Energy to produce carbon-neutral fuel at scale for industrial commercialization.<\/p><p><strong>Applications in Shipping, Manufacturing &amp; More<\/strong><\/p><p>By tackling these issues head on, MegaMax\u00ae is poised to make e-methanol production from CO<sub>2<\/sub> and hydrogen a truly viable, sustainable process. The goal is to afford customers the ability to increase production and reduce energy costs, all while decarbonizing their lines of production and transportation. Maersk, for instance, has promised to only order new ships that use carbon-neutral fuel. Its first large vessel, the <em>Ane Maersk<\/em>, is fueled by e-methanol; it arrived in Dubai in May.<\/p><p>\u201cThis is an important milestone for Maersk in our journey to decarbonize ocean transportation,\u201d said Christopher Cook, Managing Director, Maersk UAE, Oman and Qatar, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maersk.com\/news\/articles\/2024\/05\/08\/ane-maersk-makes-her-first-call-in-dubai-at-dp-world\">press release<\/a>. \u201c<em>Ane Maersk<\/em> represents our ambitions toward sustainability and innovation.\u201d<\/p><p>Clariant has more than a half-century\u2019s experience developing highly active, selective catalysts for\u00a0<strong>methanol production<\/strong>. It\u2019s now poised to become a defining leader in sustainable chemical processes. By optimizing the technology, Clariant is significantly reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub> footprints and contributing to the shared goal of a more environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient industry. And as nations and companies eye renewable energy and net-zero emissions targets, MegaMax\u00ae is set to become a critical component of their strategies.<\/p><p>The facility \u2013 located in Kasso, Denmark \u2013 is expected to start operations in last quarter of 2024, with a second plant opening in the first quarter of the following year. <strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>The effects, however, encompass far more than the facility\u2019s European footprint.
