Hydrogen Council Participates in Clean Energy Ministerial for the First Time

Hydrogen is firmly on the agenda of the Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation as Hydrogen Council participates for the first time

Malmo, Sweden – May 24, 2018 – The Hydrogen Council today joined the 9th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM)[i] co-hosted by Denmark and Sweden – the first such recognition for the group and the technology at multilateral government level. Council Co-Chair Dr Woong-chul Yang and Initiative Co-Secretary, Pierre-Etienne Franc attended roundtables hosted by both Mission Innovation[ii] and CEM respectively, alongside high-level actors from international governments, organisations and businesses.

We are witnessing a crucial moment for hydrogen,” said Dr Woong-chul Yang, Hydrogen Council Co-Chairman and Hyundai Motor Company Vice Chairman. “Governments are recognizing the key role hydrogen can play in decarbonization and investors the value it can bring worldwide. The critical mass of support needed to drive scale deployment of the value chain is becoming a reality. On our side, industry is committed to growing and deploying hydrogen solutions while continuing to innovate the technology.”

Mission Innovation – a coalition of 22 governments working to accelerate the clean energy revolution – yesterday announced the launch of the “Hydrogen Innovation Challenge” aiming to reduce costs along the value chain and further expand the deployment of hydrogen. As Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Council, I am proud to support the announcement of the Hydrogen Innovation Challenge.” Added Dr Woong-chul Yang, “The initiative further promotes international collaborations, and can add new value and foster further improvements within the already established hydrogen value chain.” Innovation Challenges are global calls to action in areas which Mission Innovation members believe could make a significant contribution to climate action efforts.

Further cementing hydrogen’s recognition in this prestigious international setting, Hydrogen Council Initiative Co-Secretary, Pierre-Etienne Franc, today joined a Clean Energy Ministerial roundtable. A unique partnership of the world’s key economies working together to accelerate the global clean energy transition, the CEM hosted a high-level Public–Private Roundtable: Innovative Solutions for Managing Energy Use and Emissions from Industry, to discuss innovative technologies and approaches to further reduce the energy and emissions intensity of industrial processes.

Held under Chatham House rules, Mr. Franc said of the meeting “The recognition of hydrogen as a systemic enabler of the energy transition continues to grow. To meet Paris Agreement commitments, the time to scale up deployment is now. Government roadmaps and policies are already embedding hydrogen more deeply than ever before, collaboration across stakeholder groups will pave the way to making this a reality.”
